Recent Studies Show Hemp Compounds Have the Ability to Prevent the Entry of SARS-CoV2 Into Cells
Compounds in cannabis can prevent infection from the virus that causes Covid-19 by blocking its entry into cells, according to a study published this week by researchers affiliated with Oregon State University. A report on the research, “Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the Emerging Variants,” was published online on Monday by the Journal of Natural Products.
The researchers found that two cannabinoid acids commonly found in hemp varietals of cannabis, cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, also known as CBDA, can bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. By binding to the spike protein, the compounds can prevent the virus from entering cells and causing infection, potentially offering new avenues to prevent and treat the disease. ( Study Finds Cannabis Compounds Prevent Infection By Covid-19 Virus (forbes.com) Total CBD is now offering a new product for immune support that combines our popular 750mg CBD product with 750mg of CBDA to boost your immune system and to help your body resist the impact of the Covid-19 virus. You can find our immune support product along with the rest of our CBD oils.
There have also been a number of studies to determine what impact CBD oil can have on the ability of those infected with COVID to recover successfully. Many deaths from COVID can be attributable to the cytokine storm that damage the lungs. A recent study by the Dental College of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia concluded:
One way CBD appears to reduce the “cytokine storm” that damages the lungs and kills many patients with COVID-19 is by enabling an increase in levels of a natural peptide called apelin, which is known to reduce inflammation and whose levels are dramatically reduced in the face of this storm.
Dental College of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia researchers reported this summer CBD’s ability to improve oxygen levels and reduce inflammation as well as physical lung damage in their laboratory model of deadly adult respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS.
Now they have shown that apelin levels go way down with the viral infection, which has killed 1 million people worldwide, and that CBD quickly helps normalize those levels along with lung function.
“It was dramatic in both directions,” says Dr. Babak Baban, DCG immunologist and associate dean for research, of shifting apelin levels in both circulating blood and lung tissue.
Similar findings were reported in a peer reviewed study by the University of Nebraska and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute.
Researchers at the University of Nebraska and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute now believe CBD could reduce the lethal lung inflammation caused by COVID-19. In a peer-reviewed article published in this month's issue of Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, the researchers called for more studies into cannabinoids for their anti-viral and anti-inflammatory capabilities to combat the coronavirus.
"Acute infection is associated with a cytokine superstorm, which contributes to the symptoms of fever, cough, muscle pain," researchers wrote. In severe cases, lung inflammation could lead to pneumonia, making it difficult to breathe for patients who already have weakened immune systems.
What does this mean for you if you are not suffering from COVID? That is a conclusion that can't be drawn from these studies, but what these studies do reveal is that the effect of CBD on your bodies immune system, which is the source of the cytokine storm, is measurable and positive. So the best thing you can do is to keep your immune system operating at maximum effectiveness and CBD oil can hep you do that.
With all of the health benefits that have been demonstrated with CBD it is only natural that people would be asking if CBD can help with the current Coronavirus pandemic. While there has been some research into the effectiveness of CBD against some viral infections, there is currently no evidence that CBD can help you recover from the Coronavirus. If you have any symptoms that you feel are due to the Coronavirus (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fabout%2Fsymptoms.html) seek medical attention immediately. If you have no symptoms read on.
The CDC has put together some good guidelines to help prevent the spread of the virus and to help prevent you from becoming infected (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html).
1. Wash Your Hands Frequently
Studies have shown that most coronaviruses can survive on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This means that you can contract covid-19 by touching any surface that an infected person has recently come into contact with. It is recommended that you wash your hands frequently with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizers. It is particularly important that you wash your hands after coughing or sneezing. Wearing gloves when you are out in public can also help in reducing the chance of getting infected through contaminated surfaces.
2. Maintain Social Distancing
Apart from surfaces, the coronavirus can also be contracted through airborne droplets that are spread when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. It is recommended that you maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from other people when you are out in public. In addition, only go out if necessary. Otherwise, continue to self quarantine at home.
3. Avoiding Touching Your Face- Mostly Your Eyes, Nose and Mouth
There is actually a very good reason to avoid touching your face. The coronavirus cannot penetrate the skin. However, the eyes, nose and mouth all have mucus membranes where the virus can pass through and enter into our bodies. If you touch a contaminated surfaces and then touch your face there is a very good chance that you could contract the virus.
4. Practice Common Courtesy
It is common courtesy to cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing. It is even more important at this time with such a contagious virus.
So How Can CBD Help You Deal with the Coronavirus?
There are several properties of CBD that can help you deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
1. Strengthen Your Immune System
There are several studies that indicate CBD can help strengthen your immune system. However, it is important to note this can only help before you contract the virus. You body needs a full 14 days for CBD to significantly impact your immune system, so it is important to start as soon as you can.
We know that being isolated for extended periods can cause feelings of dread and anxiety. CBD has been proven to be an effective way to manage anxiety. A regular dose of CBD each day can help relieve your feelings of anxiety.
CBD has also been demonstrated to be effective against depression. So if this extended quarantine has gotten you feeling a bit down, CBD may be able to help relieve your depression.
CBD has been proven to help people fall asleep. Studies have shown that CBD can counter insomnia and induce sleep.
